Last week, we asked a bold question: Can you be an ethical marketeer?

The answer, of course, was yes. But it’s one thing to agree in principle. It’s another to act with integrity day to day when pressure, pace and performance targets take over.

So this week, we’re diving into the ‘how’.

Below are ten straightforward, actionable tips that help you market more ethically – without losing impact.

If you missed the first part, catch up here

  1. Audit your data regularly
Remove inactive or unconsented contacts. Stop speaking to people who’ve opted out – even if you can still technically reach them.
  2. Use a proper preference centre
Give people the power to choose how, when and what they hear from you. Not sure what that is? Last week’s blog explains it.
  3. Be honest in every CTA
If your download isn’t really a ‘guide’ or your offer has strict conditions, say so upfront. No small print sleight of hand.
  4. Use urgency ethically
‘Only 3 left!’ is fine if it’s true. Don’t fake scarcity. It damages credibility when the offer reappears unchanged the next day.
  5. Question your targeting logic
Are you stereotyping based on postcode, gender or assumed interests? Ethical marketers challenge their own filters.
  6. Avoid manipulative design
No greyed-out ‘opt-out’ boxes or misleading layouts. Keep forms and choices clean, fair and honest.
  7. Share real success stories
If you use testimonials or case studies, be transparent. Don’t cherry-pick quotes or inflate results.
  8. Test content for inclusion
Look at your language and imagery. Who is present? Who is missing? Ethical marketing is inclusive by default.
  9. Prioritise accessibility
Make your emails readable, your buttons big enough and your PDFs screen-reader friendly. Ethics start with usability.
  10. Push back when needed
If a brief feels off, say so. Sometimes being ethical means being the one who speaks up in the room.

Final Thoughts

Ethical marketing isn’t something you finish. It’s something you maintain.

These tips aren’t radical. They’re realistic – and they make all the difference when trust is your strongest asset. If you're ready to build a brand that people want to hear from (and stay with), ethics is your long game.
