Confidence can feel like the first thing to vanish when a meeting goes wrong, a plan falls flat, or a conversation leaves you questioning your value. In the workplace, confidence is often mistaken for bravado or noise. But real confidence? That’s quiet, consistent, and powerful. It allows you to speak up when it matters, to say no when needed, and to lead calmly even when things feel chaotic. If your self-belief has taken a knock, the return journey might feel like climbing uphill in office shoes. So here are five practical reminders to help you steady your footing and feel more in control, whether you're managing a team, leading a project, or navigating a tough season. 1. Be Kind To YourselfNo one gets everything right. When confidence dips, we often shift straight into blame mode. Perhaps you’ve told yourself you're not ready for that role, not qualified enough to lead, or not fast enough to keep up. But success rarely arrives neatly. Take five minutes to jot down three things you’ve done well this week. Focus on actual results, not how you felt doing them. This short exercise can help quieten the internal critic and shift the spotlight to your capabilities. Create Time for Proper BreaksSelf-care isn’t just a Sunday spa day cliché. In high-pressure roles, we often celebrate overwork. But nobody makes their best decisions on four hours of sleep and a sixth cup of lukewarm coffee. Make room for what restores you. Whether that’s stepping away from your desk at lunchtime, walking the dog before a call, or switching your phone off after 7 pm, small resets will sharpen your clarity and lift your mood. Start with just one change this week. 3. Tune Out The Unhelpful VoicesCriticism is part of professional life. But there’s a difference between constructive feedback and comments that chip away at your worth. If you’ve ever walked away from a meeting and replayed someone’s tone more than their words, you’ll know the damage it can do. You can’t remove every unhelpful colleague or client, but you can control how much weight you give their opinions. Ask: Is this helpful? Is this fair? Is this someone I trust? That simple filter can put negativity into context. 4. Focus On What’s Within Your ControlWhen everything feels too much, it’s tempting to believe nothing you do matters. But confidence grows from action, even small ones. List the things worrying you. Then cross off anything outside your control: other people’s attitudes, decisions from the board, the wider economy. What’s left? Choose one thing on that list and plan a next step. Do it well. That’s how confidence builds. Dress For The Role You Want To KeepIn the days of remote working it's easy to keep your camera off and sit on your PJs all day but slobbing around at home, when working will cause you to slouch, give you back ache and even make you start to nod off. This isn’t about appearance for others. It’s about putting on your armour. Wearing something that makes you feel sharp can reset your posture and presence. Whether that’s a favourite pair of shoes or your go-to statement jacket, use it like a visual prompt: you’ve got this. I once worked with an outstanding Director who when they needed to make an important call would get up from their desk and walk around their office whilst on the call. This was in the days before mobiles and cordless phones. We had installed an extra long cable between the handset and phone so they didn't pull the phone from their desk. But was was really interesting is that they closed more calls on a postivie note when they stood and walked than when they sat at their desk. I asked them about it and they answered that they felt they were having a conversation when they walked rather than an interrogation when they sat. Confidence doesn’t mean pretending everything’s perfect. It means showing up when it’s not, asking questions, listening carefully, and moving forward without needing constant reassurance. 5. Dress For The Role You Want To KeepYou won’t wake up tomorrow with unshakeable self-belief just because you’ve read a blog. But implementing even one of these five approaches will start to shift your inner narrative. Confidence is a practice, not a personality trait. You already have what you need to take the next step. Trust that. #achieving #dealingwithissues #worksmarter
