Be More Productive

In my previous blogs I've covered some great ways to be more productive.
  • Tiny Decisions is a great way to choose what to do next when you need to shake up your tasks.
  • Using music to accelerate your learning or work is also a good way to deal with stress.
  • And you can use my 4-Step process for getting more accomplished each day.

So, now, I want to introduce you to another technique that will help you become more productive.

Have you heard about the Pomodoro® technique?

The Pomodoro® technique

Originally developed in the late 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, this time management method is centred around the principle of working in short, focused bursts followed by regular breaks. It’s named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used while studying at university.

The basic structure is simple:
  • Choose a single task to work on
  • Set a timer for 25 minutes (one ‘Pomodoro’)
  • Work with full focus until the timer rings
  • Take a short five-minute break
  • After four Pomodoros, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes
This rhythm supports sustained attention, minimises burnout and helps avoid the trap of multi-tasking.

Cirillo’s official website offers deeper resources if you’d like to explore the methodology further, including certified training and tools that support teams and individuals.

As with any productivity approach, the key is consistency. You may find that one Pomodoro isn’t enough to complete a larger task, but that’s the point, by breaking it down and working in repeatable cycles, you’re more likely to maintain momentum and avoid the fatigue that can come from working without structure.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a straightforward way to get started, the Pomodoro® Timer Web App is a good option. Unlike a regular timer or smart speaker, this tool prompts you to input your task before the countdown begins. That small commitment increases your focus and keeps distractions at bay. The interface also includes a wind-down countdown that helps you transition between tasks smoothly, rather than stopping abruptly mid-flow.

I particularly like the Pomodoro® Timer Web App which allows you to set a timer on your phone or pc. Unlike just setting a standard phone on your timer or Alexa, you add in what you are working on so that you can remain focused. It also has a countdown to wind up.
