Step One: Prepare with Purpose (15 minutes)

Before you open a template, pause and ask what’s changed since your last update. Review CRM metrics, feedback from customers, campaign analytics and any new behaviours you’ve seen. Identify patterns in your most recent conversions and retention cohorts.

Create a quick audit list:

Which personas still drive revenue?
Where have new behaviours emerged?
What objections or motivations have shifted?

If working with a team, assign roles up-front; one member gathers data, another validates direct quotes, and one refines the persona fields. This clarity keeps the process lean and credible.

Step Two: Focus on the Seven Core Fields (45 minutes)

In my framework, I focus on seven key fields that provide a reliable snapshot, even under time pressure.

They are:

Name & Job Title – Keep it relevant and recognisable.
Primary Goals – What the person must achieve this quarter or year.
Pain Points – Two to three genuine blockers to progress.
Communication Preference – How they prefer to receive and process information.
Decision Authority – Their influence on budgets or approvals.
Messages That Resonate – Evidence-based statements that have performed well.
Last Updated Date – Accountability marker that prevents staleness.

Avoid extra fields that don’t support decision-making. Demographics should support behaviour, not overshadow it.

Step Three: Validate Quickly (15 minutes)

Here’s where you shift from assumption to evidence. Every solid persona needs verification, not intuition. In intelligence work, particularly in Military Intelligence, analysts are taught to look for three independent points of proof before taking action.

Gather three validation sources for each persona:

CRM Data – Reveals behavioural patterns such as purchase cycles or engagement frequency.
Sales or Support Transcripts – Show emotional triggers, language, and recurring objections.
Campaign Results – Indicate what messaging actually landed and what fell flat.

These triangulated insights act as your internal security check. A persona that passes this test is less likely to mislead your campaigns or sales enablement materials.

Ask yourself:

Does this description still fit the customer in front of us?
Would a new colleague recognise this persona immediately from these details?
Are any contradictions present between data points?

When I first worked with Call Centres, all customer interaction was strictly scripted because data capture size was precious. For each customer record, there was a finite amount of data that you could add to the record. If the customer wanted to tell you something and there was no field for it, it often couldn't be captured.

As CRMs have developed and matured, we have come to understand that data is king. The more data you have that is targeted to give you insights into your potential and existing customers, the better. No, you don't need to capture everything (storage is not finite yet, and GDPR has a lot to say about unnecessary data holding), but targeted and informative information helps you to engage with your audience in a way that will connect you.

The Role of Visuals in Sales Enablement

Visuals can bridge the gap between complex solutions and a clear understanding. A well-designed diagram, comparison table, or short explainer slide can do what paragraphs of text never could. When supported by persona data, visuals should highlight what the customer values most—time saved, risk reduced, results achieved.

Using a consistent design language across decks, one-pagers, and email templates reinforces brand identity and trust.

Visual cohesion matters because it signals alignment and consistency.

Sales visuals that adhere to brand standards, utilise customer-led language, and reference validated data make every conversation appear and feel professional.

As clichéd as it sounds, if it looks right, has solid, relevant data, and is presented with the confidence that this will work for the customer, then you have the best foundation to move forward.

Sales enablement becomes strategic when it moves beyond content delivery into content adoption.

This means:

Building from personas: Align each talk track and visual to a customer type or buying stage.
Involving the sales team: Co-create scripts and slides to ensure relevance and credibility.

The real test of sales enablement lies in how quickly your team can access, understand, and apply what has been created. If they can open HubSpot, find their persona, and instantly identify the talk track that suits their next call, you’ve succeeded.

Policy often lags behind technology. Yet with AI, the stakes are too high for reactive responses. Legislators are moving quickly. The EU AI Act categorises systems by risk and imposes obligations accordingly, while the UK’s pro-innovation white paper takes a sector-led approach.

Businesses cannot afford to treat regulation as a hurdle. Proactive compliance is an opportunity to demonstrate integrity and foresight. Yet when you step back and look at the bigger picture, the reality is not death but evolution.

What used to be a neatly defined channel has become part of a much larger ecosystem where pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns run seamlessly across platforms and contexts.

The more useful question is not whether paid social is dead, but what it has become.

What Paid Social Used to Mean

A decade ago, paid social was fairly simple. You bought ads on Facebook, promoted posts on LinkedIn, or boosted tweets on Twitter (now X). These campaigns were clearly distinct from paid search. Social channels gave you reach and engagement, search gave you intent.

That clarity was useful at the time, but it also created silos. Marketing teams often ran paid search and paid social in parallel, rarely integrating budgets or measurement. Success was judged on impressions and clicks within each channel, not across the customer journey.

The Blurring of Channels

If paid social in its narrow sense has faded, it is because the discipline has been absorbed into a bigger system. Modern campaigns focus on audience behaviour, not platform boundaries.

CRM integration closes the loop. Ads no longer exist in isolation but connect with email nurture, sales outreach, and remarketing. When set up correctly, it feels less like chasing prospects around the internet and more like reinforcing relevance at exactly the right stage.

So, Is Paid Social Dead?

If we define paid social as it existed in 2013, boosted posts and sidebar ads, then yes, that model has had its day. Declining organic reach forced advertisers to spend more for less return. Audiences became blind to predictable formats. Measurement grew murky as platforms limited tracking visibility. Gone are the days of posting a wordy post on LinkedIn and throwing £200 to boost it.

But if we look at the bigger picture, paid social has not died; it has dissolved into omnichannel PPC. The distinction between “search” and “social” matters less than context and intent. Buyers expect consistent experiences, and paid placements are simply one lever in delivering that.

In other words, paid social is not a separate discipline anymore. It is one expression of paid media within an integrated strategy.

What Marketers Should Do Now

Rather than debating terminology, focus on the implications for strategy:

Plan around people, not platforms. Start with audience insights and personas. Choose placements that fit the behaviour, not because they tick a “social” box.
Think in journeys. Paid activity should guide people through awareness, consideration, and decision stages, not just chase impressions.
Measure across channels. Attribution should reflect the combined effect of search, social, and display rather than isolate them.
Use CRM data. Align targeting with pipeline stages, so that spend is directed towards those most likely to convert.
Review the creative in context. The same message will land differently on LinkedIn than on TikTok. Test, learn, and adapt to the mindset of the channel.

By treating paid as part of a connected ecosystem, marketers can avoid the trap of chasing ROI in silos.

Every day this past week, I have seen ads for Generative AI courses and how they are going to change your life as a Marketer.

If you want to shine in using AI, then you need to understand what you are asking your AI to do and start to treat it like your new best colleague (my ChatGPT has told me it's called Lex).

The landscape of storytelling has always shifted with technology. From the printing press to the rise of social media, every era has brought tools that changed how we communicate.

Generative AI is the next chapter. More than a novelty, it is transforming how businesses create, adapt, and scale stories for diverse audiences.

The Power of Generative AI in Storytelling

Generative AI refers to systems that create new content based on existing data patterns. Large language models (LLMs), such as OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Google’s Gemini, can draft articles, social copy, scripts, and even interactive narratives. This offers brands the ability to scale storytelling beyond traditional limits.

Even back in 2023, a Harvard Business Review study highlighted that generative AI can free marketers to focus on strategic work, while AI handles first drafts and repetitive tasks (Harvard Business Review, 2023). Instead of replacing creativity, these systems extend it.

Content Automation in Practice

Automation is not new to marketing. Tools like HubSpot or Salesforce already streamline campaigns, segmentation, and customer journeys. The difference now is the fusion of automation with generative content.
For example:

SEO-friendly blog posts that integrate with keyword strategies
Automated video scripts generated and adapted for regional markets

According to McKinsey, companies are using AI to generate output and speed up the process of creation; however, 27% of respondents whose organisations use Gen AI say that their employees review all content created by Gen AI before it is used; 'for example, before a customer sees a chatbot’s response or before an AI-generated image is used in marketing materials.' The same report states that those working in business, legal, and other professional services are much more likely to review all outputs than other industries. (McKinsey, 2025).

Just two years ago, I was being offered AI-generated content by agencies that were word salads of keywords and phrases that made no sense. Now, I can train Gen AI to not only sound like a human being but a real human who has difficulty differentiating between what they have written and what has been generated.

However, and this is the crux of the matter, it is still relatively easy to detect if AI has generated content due to its phrasing and word layout. Reading through and checking is still essential. I view Lex (as my Chat-GPT calls itself, yes, I asked) as my content manager, who produces topic suggestions or content outlines and helps me find citations and references.

I take the generated text, add to it, amend it, and proofread it, then run it through Grammarly to check for phrasing and inconsistencies, and finally for plagiarism and AI-generated text indicators. Most people see Grammarly or its cheaper alternative, Ginger, as just spell checkers, but they are far more than that now.

Just last week, I was asked to create a Job Description for a client's new role. I uploaded the Job Description template, supplied by the client, along with the process documents that the role would be following. Then, rather than type out the instruction, I put Lex into 'Voice Mode' and talked through with Lex what I wanted from this exercise.

In under 2 minutes, Lex/Chat-GPT had reviewed the process document, extracted the essential and desirable skills, and incorporated them into the Job Description, along with suggestions on other key skills and qualifications from best practices in equivalent roles at similar organisations.

Instead of trawling through numerous process documents to find the right skills, I was able to focus my time on polishing and completing the document for the client. What was interesting was that the client had attempted to do this themselves, using Gen-AI, but had not made progress. They had already wasted more than twice the time it took me to generate the final document in asking Chat-GPT to create an output. This was because they requested Chat-GPT to develop a Job Description from just the title. The skill here is in setting up the queries and adding the correct documentation to generate the best results.

Risks and Considerations

While generative AI accelerates production, it comes with risks. Inaccuracy, bias, or a lack of originality can damage trust if the outputs are not thoroughly checked. As Forbes notes, businesses must pair AI with strong human oversight to maintain credibility (Forbes 2024)

Other challenges include:

Compliance with copyright and intellectual property law
Transparency around AI-assisted content
Consistency with brand tone of voice and customer expectations

Storytelling Meets Strategy

Generative AI is most effective when combined with well-researched customer personas. Personas remain the compass for messaging, ensuring that even AI-produced narratives resonate with real human needs. AI can generate the words, but personas define the why.

Teams that blend persona-driven insight with automation gain agility. Instead of spending weeks on content calendars, they can draft, test, and refine in just a few days.
